In fact, so similar were male and female gnolls in appearance that they were often mistaken for one another. įemale gnolls were indistinguishable from males by size, in spite of a reputation for being shorter. These may have included talons, gleaming red eyes, or black fur with fiery orange spots.

It is believed by some that gnolls had traces of demonic blood, which may be evidenced by unusual features found among some of the gnoll bloodlines. Many gnolls also had a dirty yellow to a reddish-gray crest-like mane that stood on end when they were angry. Gnoll skin was greenish-gray, and their furry hide a light or dark brown hue, sometimes marked with spots or stripes. In part because of their height and lean musculature, gnolls were very quick compared with many other races such as humans. Though gnolls were relatively lean for their height, weighing in usually between 280‒320 lb (130,000‒150,000 g), they cut an impressive visage. While in human form, werehyenas often infiltrated villages and lured victims out to where the rest of their pack was waiting.Gnolls were extremely tall, with the average member of the race standing on average between 7′0″‒7′6″ (2.1‒2.3 m). Homelands īeyond the land of Zakhara, werehyenas could be found in some areas of the Domains of Dread. They were also adept scavengers and ate anything they could find to survive. Werehyenas preyed on gullible humans whenever they could. They mated for life, but only with members of their own pack. A dominant male made all of the decisions for the pack. Werehyenas traveled in packs of up to a dozen individuals. In canine form they attacked with a savage bite that could lock on to a victim. In human form, werehyenas used their special charm powers to avoid combat. They were also known to be immune to enchantment or charm spells. Werehyenas could not be harmed by weapons unless there were magical or constructed of iron. Because of this, flaming torches were often used to keep them at bay.

Werehyena's had an innate, deep sense of fear towards fires. Their hyena form was usually 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and had golden fur on their back with black fur on their belly and feet. Werehyenas went to great lengths to keep this hidden. The long hair concealed a second mouth located at the base of the skull. Most werehyenas were male and usually had long shaggy hair.
